The Plot: A Bad guy (Mel Gibson) who is good deep down gets double crossed by his friend and his wife. Left for dead he miraculously recovers, with the help of a grotty back alley surgeon, and goes forth to reak revenge on everybody involved, their friends, their friends tennis partners and all their mothers (you get the idea!).
Sounds mean and nasty doesn't it. Not when Mels Gibsons playing the role, and thats the main and only problem with this very good stylish thriller. Because Gibson is a likeable clean cut rogue in nearly all his films, he slips into it too easily here. If you squint your eyes you can see Riggs from Lethal Weapon lurking in the background.
This is hardly noticeable until something shocking is supposed to happen, in one example Gibson blows up a car full of people. The ideas nice, the set-ups even better BUT the close up of his rye smile makes you expect Danny Glover to burst in and say ' WE'RE GETTING TOO OLD FOR THIS !'.
Scenes like this leave you with the bitter taste of corniness and cliche. Dont get me wrong this is a good movie and I recommend a watch, but you cant help feeling it could with a bit of effort been a classic of cool. sv
